How to Transition Your Traditional Lawn into a Low-Maintenance Garden

 

The majority of homeowners do not pull out their lawn because they think they will be stuck choosing between a mud pit and a gravel desert. This is not true. Replacing your lawn with drought-tolerant landscaping if well-designed can give you a garden that is truly lush, low-maintenance, and much cheaper to keep than the grass it pushed out.

Start by Killing the Lawn Without Breaking Your Back

The typical first impulse is to rent a sod cutter or hire a guy with a skid steer to come in like the cavalry. Or maybe you can just cook the site with a propane flamethrower, right? None of the above. Sheet mulching does the same job without the machinery, without the labor costs, and without the unhelpful soil disturbance.

Sheet mulching, sometimes called lasagna gardening, is a simple, if labor-intensive approach. Mow down your old lawn as short as possible. Cover the area with overlapping sheets of plain cardboard (no plastic coatings, no tape), wet it down. On top of the cardboard, spread at least 4″ of compost, then 3-4″ of wood chips. The cardboard will immediately shut down the sun’s rays from reaching the turfgrass. This will stop its photosynthesis. As the cardboard breaks down over several months, it will feed the soil life with organic matter. When you are ready to plant, the grass will be gone and the subsoil under that cardboard will become noticeably more alive and fertile than the original turfgrass stand.

It works best if you get it started in the fall and plant in the spring, but really you can layer it anytime and just wait it out. No herbicide, no disposal costs, no compacted subsoil.

Map Your Yard Before You Plant Anything

Before you start planting, spend an afternoon walking your property at different times of the day. You’re on the hunt for microclimates, like the northside backyard that’s always cool and damp, the south-facing slope that’s a sauna from 2 p.m. on, or the edge of the drive that heats up and bakes soil dry.

Those spots dictate everything. Planning a drought-tolerant landscape design around your conditions means plants go where they’d naturally be happy, not where you’d like them to go. A plant in the wrong microclimate will become a ball and chain, forcing you to water them incessantly.

Group all your most heat- and drought-tolerant plants on the hot, dry fringes. Stick the moisture-loving plants in the low spots, or where taller plants cast natural shade during part of the day. You’ll never get to zero irrigation, but you can stop pouring water down the drain on plants that don’t need it.

Choose Plants Built For the Long Run

Local perennial plants form a low-maintenance garden foundation. They’ve adapted to the soil and climate of the region over thousands of years, so when they take root, usually after a growing season, they grow for the most part on their own.

This is partly due to their deep root systems. Some local perennials send roots to two or three feet or deeper, which allows them to draw moisture from subsoil layers that never dry, even in the summer heat. Turf grass roots in the top two inches of the soil and the moment you skip watering begins to wither.

Groundcovers like creeping thyme or sedum are plants you should be considering in places you use turf just for the aesthetic cover. They spread to fill the space, they prevent weeds by covering the earth and most species are quite resistant to foot traffic. They won’t hold up to daily use like a sports lawn, but for the 90% of the lawn that just sits there looking green, they’re a direct replacement.

The incorporation of hardscaping, gravel paths, stone slabs, permeable pavers, reduces the total planted area you need to maintain without making the space feel barren. A well-placed stone path can do as much for a garden’s visual structure as a dozen plants.

Switch From Sprinklers to Drip Lines

Overhead sprinklers were made for turfgrass. They throw water everywhere, and most of it evaporates before the roots drink a drop. Outdoor use gobbles an estimated 30% of the typical day’s domestic water, but that amount can nearly double in the heat of summer. Up to half of that may be lost to runoff and evaporation from conventional systems (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).

Switching to drip irrigation isn’t as daunting as it may seem. Most in-place sprinkler systems share main supply lines that simply can be capped at the head and adapted to accept drip emitter tubing. The tubing is run along the soil surface and delivers water directly to the base of each plant. Less evaporation, less runoff, less water on the leaves where it doesn’t do any good.

Turn on your drip systems in the early a.m. and water less frequently but more thoroughly. This encourages roots to grow downward and become more drought tolerant.

Keep Mulch on the Soil Year-Round

This is perhaps overlooked more frequently than any strategy. A three-inch-deep blanket of organic mulch, wood chips, bark, or shredded leaves, slows the escape of soil moisture by blocking evaporation, prevents weed seeds from germinating by shading them from the sunlight they need to sprout, and regulates soil temperature through both summer heat and winter cold.

Soil amendment with compost at planting time also matters. Improved soil structure holds water longer between irrigation cycles, so plants stress less during dry stretches and recover faster after heat waves.

Transition this way, zone by zone, season by season, and you’re not staring down a massive project. You’re just replacing one section of lawn at a time until there’s nothing left to mow.
